Grimacco

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 374 · Postal code: 33040

Grimacco lies in the Natisone valleys, on the border with Slovenia, and in Slovene it is called Garmak: the name comes from grm, bush, for the hazel thickets that cover the slopes. It appears in documents in 1379. Slovene is spoken here, and every hamlet has two names, one Italian and one Slovene: Clodig is Hlodič, Topolò is Topolove.

For centuries these valleys governed themselves. The village belonged to the Bank of Merso which, together with that of Antro, held the administration and the courts of first instance of the Venetian Slavia: a privilege granted in return for keeping watch over the north-eastern borders of Friuli. The elected men met around a stone slab, under the lime trees, in front of a church; once a year the two banks formed the Great Arengo. Napoleon abolished it all.
