Feast of Saints Hermagoras and Fortunatus
📅 Every year, on 12 July
On 12 July Savogna, a municipality of 482 inhabitants in the province of Udine, celebrates its patrons Saints Hermagoras and Fortunatus with a village sagra, music and local theatre.
The name comes from the Slovene sovodenj and means where two waters meet: here the Rieca stream flows into the Alberone, and the village stands exactly there. For centuries these valleys had an autonomy that existed nowhere else: in exchange for guarding the north-eastern borders, the people administered and judged themselves, through the arenghi of the deans elected by the families. The one of Antro met around a slab of stone, in the shade of the lime trees, near Biacis; and once a year the Great Arengo gathered them all by the little church of San Quirino.
It ended with Napoleon, who abolished the thirty-six vicinie and in their place made eight comuni, this one among them. The territory climbs from the valley floor to the peaks: the border with Slovenia runs across the summit of Monte Matajur, and the Rieca stream rises on the other side, runs a few kilometres through Slovenia and comes back here in small waterfalls. Underground the regional register counts fifty-seven caves and shafts: in one the bones of a cave bear were found, another is said by tradition to be inhabited by the Krivapete.
