Pulfero

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,033 · Postal code: 33046

In the rock face above Antro a cave opens with a church inside it: the little church of San Giovanni is built into the mouth, at three hundred and forty-eight metres, and the cavity behind runs on for four thousand five hundred metres, hollowed out by water. Before it was a place of worship it was a shelter and a lookout: the Romans used it to watch the roads from the east.

Inside they have found bones of cave bear, pre-Roman and Roman sherds, medieval ironwork. In the municipality the register counts one hundred and twenty-two caves and shafts, and there is water everywhere: the spring of Poiana feeds the water supply of several villages, Cividale included. The Matajur is the mountain of these parts, but by a hair the summit belongs to Savogna: to Pulfero belong the western flanks.
