Feast of Saints Peter and Paul
📅 Every year, on 29 June
On 29 June San Pietro al Natisone, a municipality of 2,223 inhabitants in the province of Udine, celebrates its patrons Saints Peter and Paul.
The village was called San Pietro degli Slavi, Saint Peter of the Slavs, until 1869, when the comune asked to change the name; but in the registers of baptisms and deaths the parish priests went on writing Paroecia Sancti Petri Slavorum until 1940, and in some cases later still. Today the official name is double again: San Pietro al Natisone - Špietar. In the census of 1971 three quarters of the inhabitants declared themselves Slovenes.
These valleys governed themselves for centuries. Until the fall of Venice the Benečija, a name that comes from Benetke, which is Venice in Slovene, was divided into two contrade, Antro and Merso, which sent the deans of the villages to the vicinìe and to the Arengo, and judged in the first instance. It was the price Venice paid to have its north-eastern border watched.
