Malborghetto Valbruna

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 969 · Postal code: 33010

The village was called Buonborghetto, the good little town. It became Malborghetto, the bad one, because of the constant border quarrels with Venice: they changed its name out of spite. It belonged to the bishops of Bamberg, who were very far away, and it lived on iron and timber.

From 14 to 16 May 1809 the Austrian captain Friedrich Hensel held out three days inside the fort before yielding to Napoleon's French. Here, besides Italian, they speak Slovene, present since the seventh century, German and Friulian, and no village belongs wholly to one language. In 2003 the flood of the Canal Valley killed two people and did great damage.
