Feast of Santa Maria Assunta
📅 Every year, on 15 August
On 15 August Resia, a municipality of 1,091 inhabitants in the province of Udine, celebrates its patroness Santa Maria Assunta (Assumption of Mary).
In a valley twenty kilometres long five varieties of the same language are spoken: the Polish linguist Baudouin de Courtenay, who studied Resian in the nineteenth century, told apart the speech of San Giorgio, Gniva, Stolvizza, Oseacco and Uccea, and concluded that the Resians must have come from different tribes. Resian is a Slavic language that has kept itself because the valley was closed.
It is closed to the east by the Canin, and to get out towards the Isonzo there were only the passes of Carnizza and Guarda: Venice kept a garrison here. Up on the pastures the stavoli remain, where they went with the cattle for four or five months: a room with the hearth for making cheese, the byre below, the hayloft above. In 1976 the Friuli earthquake brought down much of the village.
