Pontebba

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,503 · Postal code: 33016

For centuries the Pontebbana torrent cut the village in two: to the south Pontebba, under Venice and then Italy; to the north Pontafel, imperial land and then Austrian. The border, set on the torrent by the treaty of Campoformido in 1797, also separated two linguistic worlds: Friulian on this side, the German and Slovene of the Canal Valley on that. The two municipalities were reunited only in 1924.

The coat of arms says the same thing without words: an arched bridge broken off halfway, because the other half stood in another state, and above it two towers, one topped by the Venetian lion, the other by a flag. It was officially recognised in 1934. As for the name, the bridge has nothing to do with it: it used to be written la Ponteba, feminine, that is the torrent, which was here first.
