Dogna is the smallest municipality of the Canal del Ferro. The name appears in 1338 and is thought to come from the Slav dolenji, «lying low»; in Slovene the village is still called Dunja. Anyone arriving notices at once: the viaduct of the trunk road runs raised almost above the houses, and the village sits beneath it.
In the valley the footprints of a phytosaur, a Triassic reptile, have been found, and an exhibition on that period has been set up in the village. Dogna was badly damaged by the bombardments of the First World War and almost entirely rebuilt. The railway to Tarvisio reached it in 1879 and was closed in 1995, when the line was doubled: today a cycle path runs along the old track.
