Feast of Saint John the Baptist
📅 Every year, on 24 June
On 24 June Prepotto, a municipality of 809 inhabitants in the province of Udine, celebrates its patron Saint John the Baptist.
The name Prepotto comes from the Slovene pràpot, which means fern: ferns have always been everywhere here. The municipality runs for fifteen kilometres along the border with Slovenia, which is the Judrio stream, and it was in that valley that Schioppettino was born, a native grape of the Ribolla family. Above the village stands Castelmonte, with its castle and the sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin, a place of pilgrimage for the whole area.
Between 1492 and 1498, at Castelmonte, the vicar Lorenzo da Mernicco wrote what is now called the Castelmonte Manuscript, Starogorski rokopis: one of the oldest known documents in the Slovene language. Those were the years when Slovene, until then only a spoken tongue, was beginning to give itself rules so that it could be written as well. In the upland hamlets the Slovene dialect is still heard, alongside Friulian and Italian.
