Cividale named Friuli: it was Forum Iulii, and in 568 it became the first Lombard duchy in Italy. From that era it keeps its symbol — the Lombard Temple suspended above the Natisone river, its stucco saints of rare grace — which earned UNESCO listing in 2011. The Devil's Bridge vaults the emerald river with the obligatory legend attached.
The Christian museum guards the Altar of Ratchis and Callixtus's baptistery; the osterias pour friulano and ribolla beside gubana, the spiral pastry of the valleys. Small, dense, unforgettable.
