Torreano

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 2,213 · Postal code: 33040

Pietra piasentina has been quarried here since Roman times, and for centuries it was the village's whole economy: it is reckoned that more than forty quarries once worked in this territory, and today's ones can be seen from kilometres away. The men who worked them had a name of their own, the picapiera, the stonecutters; and they work them still.

Torreano straddles two languages: down below they speak Friulian, in the upper hamlets a Slovene dialect. And the Friulian here has an oddity of its own: words end in «a» where ordinary Friulian puts an «e». On the south wall of the village's old bar the inscription «Torreano 1910» is cut: back then the village began there, today that point is the centre.
