Acquafondata

Province: Frosinone · Region: Lazio · Population: 282 · Postal code: 03040

The village bears the name of a lake that no longer exists. Aqua fundata, the water that falls away downwards: so was called the sheet of water that filled the valley below the houses and fed the Rava stream as it ran down towards Molise. The reclamation began in 1882, with a tunnel to drain off the stagnant water, and was finished in 1901; that bed is today the good soil where potatoes and pulses are grown. The name, though, is older than the village: it appears already in a document of 928, when there was no settlement here at all.

In September 1806, at the gorges of Acquafondata, the French army under General Hugo was pursuing Fra Diavolo, who had just escaped capture at Sora. The guerrilla managed to halt their advance, helped by a downpour that broke in the night; by morning the French had lost all trace of him, for he had walked along the beds of the streams and over mountain paths until he reached the Abruzzi. Today Acquafondata is the least populated comune of its province, and they call it the village of the bagpipe.
