People used to leave Filignano: first for the Americas, then for central Europe and Scotland. Some came back, though, and today its twelve hamlets hold a small community of Italian Scots, the children and grandchildren of those who emigrated. Mario Lanza's father was from here too, and every August the village holds a festival in his name.
In the winter of 1943 the village found itself on the Gustav line, and for ten days, from 29 November to 9 December, the fighting was on Monte Pantano: the Americans of the Red Bull on one side, the Germans on the other. Filignano, Lagoni, Mastrogiovanni and Cerasuolo lost houses and civilians, and the comune was given the bronze medal for civil merit. Today there are 689 residents.
