Conca Casale

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 214 · Postal code: 86070

The village waited a century to stand on its own: a hamlet of Venafro until 1811, then a hamlet of Pozzilli until 1911. It sits in a bowl at the foot of Monte Corno, which rises to 1057 metres, ringed by other mountains, and it fills up again each summer when the emigrants come back for the feast of Sant'Antonio.

There are 214 residents and the number has been falling for decades; for most services people go down to Venafro, eleven kilometres below. What the village has of its own is a cured meat that carries its name, the Signora di Conca Casale.
