The patron saints of Gaeta are Saints Erasmus and Marcianus, celebrated on 2 June with the town's patronal feast. Local devotion also extends to other important occasions: Saint Anne is celebrated on 26 July, while Our Lady of Porto Salvo is honoured with a typical feast of the sea, with a procession of boats and a popular festival. Since 1927, every second Sunday of August, a traditional procession has set out from the church of the Discalced Fathers and crossed the town.
Among the town's religious monuments, the church of San Domenico stands out, its high altar composed in 1928 reusing the slab of a Roman sarcophagus as an antependium, a sign of the town's long historical stratification. Gaeta, facing onto the gulf of the same name in the Tyrrhenian Sea, has for centuries been one of the most important strongholds of southern Lazio, as the mighty Angevin-Aragonese Castle that still dominates its skyline attests.
