Vallinfreda

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 317 · Postal code: 00020

Vallinfreda lies in the easternmost part of the province of Rome, at the foot of Monte Aguzzo, its territory climbing from a little over five hundred metres in the valley to more than a thousand. It was a comital fief of the Borghese family until feudal tenure was abolished. Its coat of arms is unusual: it bears a silver Maltese cross on a blue field, with three stars above and a crescent below, and the shield itself is set against another Maltese cross — the badge of the Order of Jerusalem appearing twice in the same arms.

In 1867 the village was touched by the campaign of the Roman Countryside for the liberation of Rome: Garibaldi's men passed through this territory. The figure Vallinfreda is most attached to, however, is a friar, the blessed Diego Oddi, who was born here and to whom the village has dedicated a monument. There is much walking to be done round about: the circuit of the Way of Saint Peter the Hermit, the natural monument of Le Aie, and — something you would not expect in these mountains — a few monumental sequoias.
