Ladislao Odescalchi founded it in 1888 as a bathing resort for the Romans, and the name stuck: Ladispoli is the Capital's "home beach", with dark iron-rich sand — hot in the sun, once sought for sand therapy — and a straightforward, popular seafront. To the north, the Torre Flavia marsh is a birdwatching oasis with its ruined tower standing in the water.
In April the Roman Artichoke festival, among Lazio's longest-running farm fairs, fills the streets with fried food and shows. At Palo, the Odescalchi castle and its wood recall the princes' coast: Rome is half an hour by train.
