The Banditaccia is a city built for eternity: Cerveteri's Etruscan necropolis, UNESCO-listed since 2004, lines up grassy burial mounds and sepulchral streets for kilometres, walked like a town — for that is what it meant to be, its chambers carved to imitate the houses of the living. From here came the Sarcophagus of the Spouses, found in 1881 and now in Rome's Villa Giulia.

Ancient Caere ranked among the richest cities of the Etruscan Mediterranean. The medieval village, museum in its castle, and countryside of vines and artichokes complete a day trip from Rome that always pays.
