Carasco

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 3,649 · Postal code: 16042

At Carasco it is the water that decides. Here the Lavagna, the Sturla and the Graveglia meet and become the Entella, and here the floods have wiped out almost the whole past of the town: in the seventeenth century they carried off the old parish church of San Marziano, abandoned and rebuilt higher up, and for some years now the digs have been bringing it back out, apse, floors and altars.

The name is said to join car, head, and asco, watercourse. The bridge over the Sturla, four arches of stone and brick, was brought down by the floods of 1608 and 1782 and rebuilt each time. The castle of Rivarola, of 1132, was the Genoese outpost in Fieschi land. The population is 3,649.

Saint Martian, patron of a town where every chapel has its own feast Sunday

📅 Every year, on 9 December

Carasco celebrates Saint Martian on 9 December, with the church dedicated to him; a mile and a half from the parish church of Paggi stands instead the chapel dedicated to Saint Albert of Genoa, Saint Gotthard and Saint Bernard, each celebrated on a different Sunday.
