Saint Lawrence and the Addiu du Fantin
📅 Every year, on 10 August
On 10 August Cogorno celebrates Saint Lawrence; on the 13th, instead, the square before the Fieschi basilica re-enacts a count's bachelor farewell with a medieval banquet.
A basilica in a village of few souls, and the explanation lies with two popes. Innocent IV and Adrian V were both Fieschi, and the lords of Cogorno descended from that family: it was that alliance which made it possible to raise the Fieschi basilica in the hamlet of San Salvatore.
The Fieschi ceded the fief to Genoa in 1203, and from then on Cogorno followed the fortunes of the Republic; in 1815 it went to the Kingdom of Sardinia and from 1859 into the mandamento of Lavagna. On the coat of arms is a tower, the family's emblem. The comune is a scattered one, with no single centre. There are 5,641 residents.
