Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
📅 Every year, on the second Saturday of July
On the second Saturday of July Lavagna celebrates the Madonna del Carmine, in the sanctuary built by the discalced Carmelites between 1617 and 1631.
Since 1949 Lavagna has been cutting an enormous cake and handing it out to whoever, in the crowd, finds the half that matches their own ticket. It is called the Torta dei Fieschi, and the six medieval quarters parade through the streets.
The Fieschi were at home here: two popes came out of this family, Innocent IV in 1243 and Adrian V in 1276, and their hold on eastern Liguria lasted until Genoa absorbed them. In 1564 the corsair Dragut sacked the district, and after him new fortifications went up, with artillery. There are 12,579 residents.
