Chiavari

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 27,338 · Postal code: 16043

Chiavari's black porticoes — the medieval dark-stone arcades — have lined up shops, cafés and focaccia bakeries for eight centuries along one of Liguria's finest covered walks. This Tigullio town is home of the chiavarina chair, the featherweight seat invented in 1807 that seduced Europe's courts and twentieth-century designers.

The antiques market, the palaces of returned South-American emigrants and the bay with its seafront promenade compose a concrete, gentlemanly Liguria — less shop window, more life. The Fontanabuona valley hinterland is a step away.
