Ne has the shortest municipal name in Italy, level with Re and Vo'. It is thought to be what is left of the Latin nemus, which did not mean a wild wood but a planted one: perhaps the val Graveglia was already under olive groves in antiquity.
The municipality is a scattered one, the town hall stands at Conscenti, and the whole territory lies inside that valley, whose geology draws scholars and university students. Since the nineteen-fifties entire hamlets have been left empty; one of them, though, Ca' di Favale, below Zerli, is filling up again. The population is 2,361.
