San Colombano Certenoli

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 2,687 · Postal code: 16040

It took years for the nine hamlets to agree on what to call themselves. In 1863 they decided to keep both names, San Colombano, the most important historically, and Certenoli, the largest; the town hall was built on the boundary between the two, at Aveggio. On the standard the names of the nine hamlets are embroidered in gold thread.

Between 1941 and 1943, between Calvari and Pian di Coreglia, a prisoner-of-war camp was in operation, holding mostly British and Commonwealth men captured in Africa: it had been designed for 4,000 people and about 15,000 passed through it. For the sacrifices of its people and for the partisan struggle the municipality bears the War Cross for Military Valour. The population is 2,687.
