The via Postumia crossed the pass, and the traffic towards the Po plain was such that at Fraconalto, the old Fiaccone, documents speak of nearly a hundred ovens to feed it. Nobody vouches for the exact number, but it gives the measure of how many people came through.
The Roman road reached the Bocchetta pass, at 772 metres, running along the ridge between the Riccò and Verde streams; a little beyond the flats of Pian di Reste stood a monastery that took travellers in, and digs in the 1960s and 1970s turned up sherds and traces of it. There are 3,756 residents.
