Casella

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 3,232 · Postal code: 16015

On 17 February 1747 Casella was burned down, and not by the enemy: the troops of the Republic of Genoa accused the inhabitants of having helped the Austrians who were besieging Genoa. The village was paying for its position, at the crossing of the road of the imperial fiefs and one of the salt roads that climbed from the port towards the Po valley.

Before this name it was Redigabio, a Lombard word; the present one is thought to come from cassella, the farmhouse with the stable on the ground floor and the dwelling above. Since 1929 a narrow-gauge train has come up from Genoa, crossing the Apennines at the Crocetta d'Orero, at 468 metres: the lowest Apennine pass there is. The population is 3,232.
