Serra Riccò

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 7,931 · Postal code: 16010

In 1923, digging for the Genova-Casella railway near the hamlet of Niusci, more than four hundred silver coins came to light, struck by Ligurian mints between the fourth and the first century BC. They had ended up there along the salt road.

That road went from Genoa to the Val Scrivia over the Crocetta d'Orero pass, which at 465 metres is the lowest of all the Apennine passes, and the Romans already used it. Serra Riccò is a scattered comune: the two old pievi of Serra and San Cipriano had, in Napoleonic times, given rise to two separate comuni. There are 7,931 residents.
