Our Lady of the Guard and the three popes
📅 Every year, on 29 August
On 29 August Ceranesi celebrates Our Lady of the Guard, on the summit of Monte Figogna: in just over twenty years her sanctuary has hosted three popes.
On the via Postumia, from the thirteenth century, there was a caravanserai: the «Cà de Rossi», at San Martino di Paravanico, where those who carried goods between the port of Genoa and the markets of Ovada and Piedmont stopped.
Not far off there was also a prison, the Gaiazza, and the name says so: it comes from the dialect galeassa, galley. The comune, on the other hand, was born in 1798: before that every frazione, with its parish, was a small comune of its own under the constitution of the Republic of Genoa, and the new municipality was cut along the boundaries of the old pieve. There are 4,006 residents.
