Coreglia Ligure

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 274 · Postal code: 16040

On 2 July 1557, tradition says, the Madonna appeared to a peasant of Canevale, Giovanni Chichizola, on the path going down to Rapallo: from that came the sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Montallegro. On his birthplace a chapel was built in 1882.

In 1941, between Pian di Coreglia and Calvari, prisoner-of-war camp number fifty-two was built: it had room for four thousand people and fifteen thousand passed through it, mostly British and Commonwealth soldiers captured in Africa. After 8 September 1943 the camp was used for a few months by the Italian Social Republic: twenty-nine Jews passed through it, all deported to Auschwitz. The population is 274.
