Orero

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 604 · Postal code: 16040

Orero reads the same both ways: it is one of the five Italian municipalities with a palindromic name, along with Ala, Ateleta, Onano and Siris. The first official mention is from 1059, in a deed of the bishop of Genoa.

A branch of the salt road passed through here, the one the muleteers took from the salt pans on the coast up to Piacenza; when new roads made it useless, the village kept going on slate. It is still quarried, and at Isolona a stop on the slate-road museum shows the first machines that cut the blocks of black stone. The population is 604.

Saint Ambrose, patron of a town tied to slate working

📅 Every year, on 7 December

Orero celebrates Saint Ambrose on 7 December, in the parish church dedicated to him; the hamlet of Isolona preserves the memory of the quarrying of «pietra fontanina» stone and the first machines used to process slate blocks.
