It is the highest municipality in Liguria: 1,012 metres, in a basin closed off by monte Maggiorasca, where Liguria no longer tastes of the sea. Snow lies into April and sometimes beyond: ten centimetres fell at Rocca d'Aveto in June 2006.
The castle was built by the Malaspina, then passed to the Fieschi and, after their conspiracy against the Doria, to admiral Andrea Doria himself. His heirs ran the fief badly and harshly: in 1796 the people rose and killed the masters of the castle. The population is 1,217.
