Valbrevenna

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 812 · Postal code: 16010

As a municipality Valbrevenna was born late, in 1896: before that the villages of the valley belonged to Savignone, Casella and Montoggio. Its coat of arms carries six mountains and seven gold crosses, one for each parish: five are in the archdiocese of Genoa and two in the diocese of Tortona.

People lived on chestnuts — dried and milled into flour — and on seasonal work: the men as farm hands in Piedmont and Lombardy, the women in the rice fields around Vercelli. Then they left for Argentina, Chile, Peru. Of the three thousand who lived here when the municipality was founded, six hundred were left by the nineteen-seventies. The population is 812.
