Savignone

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 3,226 · Postal code: 16010

On the morning of 24 April 1945 an ambulance left Savignone with general Günther Meinhold inside, commander of the German forces around Genoa: the headquarters of the northern command was quartered in the villas of the village, and from here the general was taken, hidden, to villa Migone in Genoa to sign the surrender.

Long before that, in 725, the Lombard king Liutprand is said to have stopped here while carrying the remains of Saint Augustine from Cagliari to Pavia: the monastery of San Salvatore, now a private house, is traced back to that halt. The village had grown on the flat ground left by a landslide off monte Pianetto, and between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries it lived on its spa and on Genoese holidaymakers. The population is 3,226.
