Torriglia

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 2,392 · Postal code: 16029

Torriglia was once a principality. The castle was raised by the Fieschi, Genoa stormed it in 1432, and after the conspiracy of 1547 the fief passed to the Doria: a marquisate until 1760, then a principality of the Empire, until in 1797 Napoleon abolished the imperial fiefs.

During the second world war the Republic of Torriglia was born here, the first partisan republic in Liguria. The village sits on a watershed between the val Trebbia and the val Scrivia, at the foot of monte Prelà, inside the Antola park, with the Brugneto lake not far off. The population is 2,392.

Our Lady of Divine Providence, patroness beneath the castle of the Fieschi and Doria

📅 Every year, on the last Sunday of August

Torriglia celebrates Our Lady of Divine Providence on the last Sunday of August; the town is dominated by its castle, once belonging to the Malaspina, then the Fieschi and finally the Doria family, destroyed by Torriglia's own inhabitants in 1799 and only reopened to the public in 2009.
