Vobbia

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 463 · Postal code: 16010

The valley is a bowl closed in by mountains, and its only way out is a narrow, sheer gorge: for centuries, to leave, it was easier to climb to the ridge and go through Crocefieschi. Down in the ravine stands the castle of the Pietra, which watched over the salt road between Genoa and the Po plain.

From Crocefieschi, though, Vobbia walked away. At the end of the nineteenth century a road planned between Crocefieschi and Savignone would have cut the valley out: the people of Vobbia protested, it reached the newspapers and then the Interior Ministry, and on 13 June 1901 a decree set up the new municipality. The population is 463.

Our Lady of Grace and the castle wedged in the rock

📅 Every year, on the second Sunday of August

On the second Sunday of August Vobbia celebrates the Madonna delle Grazie; a little further up the valley, the castello della Pietra has stood wedged between two rock buttresses since the 13th century.
