Castellaro

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 1,233 · Postal code: 18011

On the altar of the sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Lampedusa there is a small painting of the Virgin which, tradition says, once served as a sail: Andrea Anfosso, of Castellaro, had been taken prisoner by Barbary pirates on Lampedusa, made a vow to the Madonna and got away with the canvas stretched as a sail.

The same sanctuary carries the village's worst date: on 23 February 1887, Ash Wednesday, the western Riviera earthquake brought down part of its roof, and in Castellaro alone thirty-eight people died. Today the village lives on flowers and, less so, on oil. The population is 1,233.

Saint Peter in Chains, patron on a hill where the old castle once stood

📅 Every year, on 1 August

Castellaro celebrates Saint Peter in Chains on 1 August, in the Baroque church built between 1619 and 1634 precisely where the town's old castle, destroyed in 1341, once stood, and which houses works by the Genoese sculptor Anton Maria Maragliano.
