Feast of Saint Matthew
📅 Every year, on 21 September
On 21 September Pietrabruna celebrates Saint Matthew; the village's main church is dedicated to him together with Saint Gregory.
Pietrabruna lived for a long time on lavender: it was gathered on the slopes and distilled. Today anemones have taken its place, and they go to the flower market of Sanremo. The village cake is the stroscia, a rustic tart made with taggiasca olive oil, lemon and a drop of white vermouth.
On 14 December 1944 the Nazi-fascists attacked the hamlet of Torre Paponi during a sweep: two men killed and a woman mortally wounded. Two days later they came back, surrounded the village, shelled it and went in killing twenty-five people; then they looted it and set it on fire. The population is 541.
