Riva Ligure

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 2,861 · Postal code: 18015

Riva got its watchtower in 1546, when Taggia agreed to stop collecting the contributions the village paid towards the Taggia walls, on condition that the money became a fortification on the coast. It was not enough: between 1551 and 1562 the Barbary pirates landed here five times, the village emptied and the harbour, which was Taggia's port, was abandoned.

Long before, around 1036, marchioness Adelaide of Turin had given these lands to the Benedictines of Santo Stefano in Genoa, who put them under vegetables, cereals and vines. Today Riva Ligure has the mildest climate in the whole of Liguria. The population is 2,861.

Saint Maurice and the vow of 1693

📅 Every year, on 22 September

On 22 September Riva Ligure celebrates Saint Maurice in the parish church built after a 1693 vow; the older church, mentioned as early as 1205, is today the sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio.
