Read more →This is the province where the capital is not the biggest town: Imperia gives the province its name, but Sanremo has more residents. It is Liguria's last stretch before France, with the Alpes-Maritimes border running along the west and north, Piedmont's province of Cuneo beyond it, Savona to the east and the Ligurian Sea to the south. The land is mountainous and hilly almost everywhere: 66 municipalities, just over 214,000 people, and valleys that climb steeply a few kilometres from the beach.
Most visitors stay on the water: Sanremo for city life, Bordighera and Ospedaletti at a slower pace, Ventimiglia pressed against the French frontier, Diano Marina at the far end of the province. The quieter half lies behind the shore, and it is close by: drive up a valley from Taggia or Camporosso and the sea vanishes behind the hills within twenty minutes.
