Taggia

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 14,032 · Postal code: 18018

In 1855 a statue of the Madonna, carved by Salvatore Revelli of Taggia, was said to have moved its eyes more than once: since then the church of Santi Giacomo e Filippo has also been called the sanctuary of the Madonna Miracolosa. Inside are fourteen side chapels and works by the Cambiaso and by Francesco Brea.

Taggia is a comune in three pieces: the medieval town three kilometres from the sea, Arma on the beach and Levà in between. Before it there was the abbey of Nostra Signora del Canneto, founded by the monks of Saint Columbanus: in 891 the Saracens pulled it down, killed the monks and burned the library. There are 14,032 residents.

The vow of 1626 and the Madonna whose eyes moved

📅 Every year, the feast was born on 12 February 1626; today's re-enactment is on the last weekend of February

Taggia venerates the Madonna Miracolosa: in 1855 one of her statues reportedly moved its eyes repeatedly, which the Church declared miraculous. The oldest feast, though, dates from 1626.
