Pompeiana

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 809 · Postal code: 18015

On 22 May 1557 the Barbary pirates came into the village: they burned the houses, killed seven or eight people and carried twenty-five away. Of one of them a letter survives, dated 20 July 1564: it was written by Giacomo Filippo, of Pompeiana, a slave in Algiers together with his children and his grand-daughters.

Against those raids the two sixteenth-century towers were built: the round one, called dei Panei, now holds a small ethnographic museum open in summer. The village's name, on the other hand, comes from a Roman farm, the Fundus Pompeiani. The population is 809.
