Diano Marina

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 6,004 · Postal code: 18013

Around 200 BC the Romans set up a small staging post here and called it Lucus Bormani, sacred clearing inside a wood. The wood was the one that ran from Capo Cervo to Capo Berta, and the god was Borman, lord of the waters: the local tribes feared him so much that they advised travellers not to go in.

Long before, between the eighteenth and the sixteenth century BC, there was already a coastal settlement of the Ligurian Ingauni here, of which cinerary urns remain; and on the slopes behind, stone tools of Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers have been found. The amphorae recovered travelled from Marseille to southern Italy. There are 6,004 residents.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, patroness of a town rebuilt after the 1887 earthquake

📅 Every year, on 16 July

Diano Marina celebrates Our Lady of Mount Carmel on 16 July; the area's first evangelisation is credited, according to some sources, to Saints Nazarius and Celsus around the 1st century, in the archaeological area of ancient Lucus Bormani, a town rebuilt after the devastating earthquake and tsunami of 1887.
