Diano San Pietro

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 1,101 · Postal code: 18013

In 1564, when the Barbary pirates came ashore wherever they pleased, a ring of walls was raised here: the fort of Diano San Pietro, where the people of the valley shut themselves in and waited for it to pass. Inside there are still paintings and statues of real worth.

The village lies along the San Pietro stream, among vegetable plots and olive groves, and its hamlets have two old bridges — the one at Roncagli is of 1611 — and at Borganzo a polyptych by Antonio Brea of 1518. The English writer Annie Hawes set her books in these parts. The population is 1,101.
