Cervo

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 1,128 · Postal code: 18010

The church of San Giovanni Battista at Cervo is known as the church of the Corallini because it was paid for partly with coral money: the local fishermen went out for it in the seas of Corsica and Sardinia, and from here it left again for Genoa and Livorno to be worked.

The village climbs in front of the sea, with the Clavesana castle behind it and a tower at the top said to be Byzantine. Since 1964, when the Hungarian violinist Sándor Végh founded the chamber music festival here, Cervo has played every summer. The population is 1,128.

Saint John the Baptist, patron of the «church of the coral fishermen»

📅 Every year, on 24 June

Cervo celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 24 June; its parish church, built between the 17th and 18th centuries partly with the proceeds of coral fishing, is known as the «church of the coral fishermen» and overlooks the square where a celebrated chamber-music festival is held every summer.
