San Bartolomeo al Mare

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 3,127 · Postal code: 18016

Red coral was part of the living here. Between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries the men of San Bartolomeo, Cervo and Diano went out to fish for it, and in the sixteenth century they set up the Impresa di Bosa; since the cargo readily ended up in the hands of pirates, they also kept a small fleet to escort it.

The recent history of the municipality is a bumpy one: abolished in 1923 and merged into Diano Marina, moved to Cervo in 1925, it was re-established in 1947 and took its present name only in 1968. At the sanctuary of the Rovere, on 2 and 3 February, one of the oldest fairs of the western Ligurian coast is held. The population is 3,127.
