Cipressa

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 1,271 · Postal code: 18017

At Lingueglietta there is something rare: a church turned into a fortress. San Pietro was built in the middle of the thirteenth century and three hundred years later, when the Barbary corsairs were working this coast, it was fortified and the people shut themselves inside. Above the village stands the sixteenth-century Gallinara tower, which ended up on the coat of arms.

The name, though, is known above all to cyclists: since 1982 the Cipressa climb has been the second-to-last of the Milan-Sanremo, and the village bell tower marks the point where it ends. The population is 1,271.

The Visitation, patroness of a town with a church turned into a fortress

📅 Every year, on 2 July

Cipressa celebrates the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 2 July; her 17th-century Baroque parish church stands in the historic centre, while the hamlet of Lingueglietta holds the rare fortress-church of San Pietro, converted for defence against Barbary raids.
