San Lorenzo al Mare

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 1,373 · Postal code: 18017

They were born as two villages facing each other across the rio San Lorenzo: the right bank belonged to the Lengueglia and the monks of Villaregia, the left was built by Porto Maurizio. It took centuries for them to become one municipality, the smallest in Liguria: little more than a square kilometre.

From the mouth of the stream, in 1284, sixty-two sailors left on a galley for the Meloria. The railway that ran along the sea has been moved uphill: a cycle path runs in its place, and from the car park of the old station, in 2015, the Giro d'Italia set off. The population is 1,373.
