Civezza

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 640 · Postal code: 18017

Civezza is Ligurian with Venice inside it. It was founded in the second half of the twelfth century by the community of Porto Maurizio, which sent three families of Venetian origin — the Ricca, the Dolca and the Arrigo — and ever since the patron saint has been St Mark, the main square is called piazza Venezia and the old coat of arms carried the lion.

In 1554 the corsairs Dragut and Uccialì came from the sea: they sacked and burned the village. So as not to be caught out again the people of Civezza raised five towers; the one in piazza Venezia, square and in bare stone, is still whole. The population is 640.

Saint Mark, patron with a winged lion in the town's old coat of arms

📅 Every year, on 25 April

Civezza celebrates Saint Mark the Evangelist on 25 April, in the parish church dedicated to him, built between 1777 and 1783; before the current coat of arms was granted, the municipality used an emblem with a passant lion of Saint Mark, like Venice's.
