Maissana

Province: La Spezia · Region: Liguria · Population: 659 · Postal code: 19010

In the Lagorara valley, at seven hundred and fifty metres, the digs between 1988 and 1995 brought to light an open-air jasper mine, and a large one: two extraction areas, two shelters on the opposite slope, and on the ground the waste flakes and the broken hammerstones of the people who worked it.

It is also the coldest village in the province: in winter the averages run between five degrees below zero and four above, and in February 2009 sixty-five centimetres of snow fell in a single night. In the bell tower of Santa Maria di Lagorara hangs the largest peal of bells in the Val di Vara. The population is 659.

Saint Bartholomew, patron of a town with a prehistoric jasper mine

📅 Every year, on 24 August

Maissana celebrates Saint Bartholomew on 24 August, in the 1582 church; the municipal territory holds the Valle Lagorara archaeological site, an ancient open-air jasper mine worked by prehistoric humans and studied between 1988 and 1995.
