Moneglia

Province: Genoa · Region: Liguria · Population: 2,890 · Postal code: 16030

Set into the outer wall of the church of Santa Croce are some links of a chain. By tradition they are the ones that closed the mouths of Porto Pisano: Genoa gave them to Moneglia in thanks for the galleys it sent to the Meloria in 1284 and to Porto Pisano in 1290.

That same Genoa punished the village in 1477 for a supposed understanding with the Fieschi, with looting and a fine of two thousand scudi. The name, on the other hand, is very old: ad Monilia, on the Tabula Peutingeriana, the copy of a Roman military map. Today the village is one of the most beautiful in Italy, in a bay closed by two headlands. The population is 2,890.
